An evening about sustainable development in Africa
Sister Placida and Glebe teacher Greg John will give a detailed update of recent developments at Imani, providing a first-hand accounting of the support she has received from us. As an international award winner for creative rural development (http://www.woman.ch/june09/women/laureates08/laureates-africa-5.php), Sister Placida will share with you her vision for future developments at Imani, and for rural Africa in general. In addition there will be light refreshments, a meet and greet with Sister Placida, door prizes, African items for sale, and best of all the event is free.
Sister Placida and her Imani Vocational Training Centre were the subject of a documentary Greg John made 2 years ago and screened across Canada last summer (www.operationimani.com). Over the past 4 years Sister Placida and Greg have partnered to construct a variety of income-generating projects at her school in Tanzania, including a fish pond, a pig shelter, garden irrigation, a brick-making operation, a poultry business and a carpentry workshop. These projects are valued at over $50,000 and are designed to help her institution become fully sustainable and self-reliant.
